An Understanding on OCD

by admin on November 23rd, 2010

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is one the most prevalent known type of anxiety disorder, but sad to say, few people understand how this presents and how it works. Those who suffer with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is certainly not crazy. They simply have a persistent repetitive behavior which sets on their day-to-day lives.

The illness comes in a range of very mild to very severe, it has been suggested that everyone has some form of OCD, but most people are able to control thoughts and actions so they live a normal life. OCD, as the name implies, has two major elements; the Obsession and the Compulsion.

The obsession comes with the desire or fear, such as is the fear of contamination or equally the desire for perfection. The Compulsion is the utmost repetitive behavior which is a result of obsession. Let us say for instance, somebody with the irrational fear that a loved one will die may feel an overwhelming compulsion to always count everything to a particular numerical level. They have an irresistibly impulsive feeling as though their loved ones will undoubtedly die if they do not count up to this particular number.

Compulsions and obsessions can sometimes be relieved using rituals, which sometimes help to temporarily relieve the stress and ameliorate the attack. Although a lot of people may joke that they “have OCD” when they are pedantic about cleaning chores or do something that may be considered odd, a severe OCD is really no laughing matter. A person who suffers severely from this condition will find it hard to work, go to school, college, and lives alone, drive, conduct a business or for that matter even go out in public.

OCD is chronic ailment, though many people try to hide their symptoms from others and minimize the compulsions at the very least. Most people with OCD truly understand that they are being irrational, but they just can’t help carrying out the OCD behavior.

We wonder what induces the development of OCD? Many medical experts thought that this has been caused by childhood environmental conditions, but it is now widely accepted that a particular neurological problem is probably the cause. There are more than one factor that influences in the development of OCD, though there are treatments, the cure for OCD is not yet known.

Looking out for help is very important. With the help of consultation, medication, and behavioral therapy, sufferers with OCD can truly begin to lead normal lives once again. Talking to a clinician or doctor about the concerns on OCD is one step to controlling it. Talking to a friend or confidante about this matter can also alleviatethe symptoms. He or she may be able aid you in taking the correct steps toward treatment for your OCD. This disorder can be terribly devastating, but with a modicum of consistent work, OCD can be overcome.
